Starting on October 17, the extraordinary life of Letizia Battaglia goes on view at CAMERA Torino, told through more than 200 photographs: from her celebrated photojournalistic coverage of the Mafia to religious festivals, from the faces of Sicily to the most intimate and poetic aspects of everyday life.
Co-produced by CAMERA and Jeu de Paume and organised in collaboration with the Archivio Letizia Battaglia, the major exhibition curated by Walter Guadagnini arrives in Turin following previous presentations at Château de Tours, the Les Rencontres d’Arles festival and the Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì.
Spanning fifty years of activity, from 1970 to 2020, the exhibition offers an insight into the complexity and power of a photographic practice in which personal experience, photography and civic engagement are deeply intertwined.
The exhibition is complemented by 22 magazines with which Battaglia collaborated — and which, in some cases, she founded and edited — as well as by Amore Amaro (2012), a documentary film about her life directed by Francesco G. Raganato.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Dario Cimorelli Editore.
